Many Americans consider a weekend watching a basketball game to be perfect. Millions of Americans play basketball each year. It is one of the most popular sports for boys. Basketball has been an accepted Olympic event since 1939. Basketball is a sport that both boys and girls can enjoy playing. A requirement is not typically, to be tall, however it does seem to help the player succeed. Basketball helps kids improve their overall strength and endurance. Conditioning is usually top notch as well. Hand-eye coordination is also greatly improved due to continuous play, and interdependence and teamwork skills are highly improved. Kids who play basketball do not have to be tall; however, it does help give them a slight edge over the other kids. Shorter kids can still be successful players by improving their ball handling skills and practicing.
To succeed at basketball kids must be quick, both physically and mentally. Quick thinking will help the game succeed so that they pick quickly the right team member to throw the ball to next. Hand-eye coordination is necessary due to the dribbling, shooting and passing of the ball.
Kids can generally start playing basketball as young as five, most teams consist of 10 players, however the games can be adapted if more or less children are available. When kids between the ages of 5-7 play, they focus mainly on skill development. It is not until typically 8 years and older that they start doing competition teams. Small children usually do not have the upper body strength necessary to shoot the ball, however with a smaller ball, and lowered hoop it is possible for even the youngsters to play.
Once a child is approximately 8 years old, they can start playing competition games; however, most kids do not actively pursue competition teams until they are in middle school. When your child is first starting out, look for a team that plays on a half-size court, as well as with lowered baskets. This will help your small child feel less vulnerable and more comfortable with the sport. Using the smaller, lighter weight balls also help greatly when getting started.
Teams are available in either single gender, or in co-ed teams depending upon your preference as a parent, and your child’s comfort level. Some kids prefer playing on co-ed teams; this gives them more children to play against, of all different skills levels. Most teams hold approximately one hour of practice, and one game a week. Advanced teams may require more practice, as well as additional game opportunities are available.
The costs typically associated with basketball are lower than some other sports; however, they are not typically free. Most fees range from $10 up to as much as $100 for the team, which will include the uniform. The only other additional expense that is a standard requirement are basketball shoes. These can be purchased from $50-$150 for a good quality pair, they are an essential requirement, as they provide a good amount of support especially in the ankles. Unless your child is very heavy into the sport there is no reason or need to purchase their own ball and hoop for practice. However, these can be purchased for less than $200 typically for the ball and hoop with a hoop that is portable. Basketball is a great choice for highly athletic kids who do great in team situations. |
