| Drums, Percussion Instruments, and Your Child |

Percussion instruments can range from those you hit to those you just shake so you can make beautiful music. Instruments range from drums, maracas, chimes; bells, cymbals, and triangle just to mention a few. Many compare drum practice to similar to the martial arts. Drum practice helps to teach timing, focus, control, coordination, dexterity, understanding problems and creativity. Some people have chosen to play drums to release aggression, and tension. Percussion instruments also give the musician to be quite self-expressive and the opportunity to move around a bit more than most other musicians are able to do. Drums can be played in almost every musical form from orchestras to rock bands, to pop bands.
Disadvantages are still possible with percussion instruments as well though, since their movement is so different from other instruments the musicians are prone to carpal tunnel syndrome or wrist tension. Another downside to percussion instruments especially drums is the volume level associated with the music. The noise level can sometimes be borderline on causing ear damage to your child depending upon the area where your child practices.
Other hearing matters that should be considered is that of the fellow house members as well as that of the neighbors. Since drums are so very loud, it is possible for the noise to travel quite far and upset neighbors. Try to make sure that you arrange a time for your child to practice when they are less likely to upset others in the house as well as the fewest neighbors possible. Generally, in most neighborhoods during the day is a good option, and late at night is generally unacceptable to most neighbors especially those that have to be up early for work.
Percussion instruments are usually best to start learning once a child is about 8 years, sometimes older. By this age, they typically are capable of holding and learning good rhythm and timing. Costs are relatively low compared to some other instruments with drum sets costing between $400 upwards to $800 for a small set. Drumsticks are very inexpensive costing approximately $10 a pair, as long as your child is careful they should have few drumsticks break, which will reduce the need to replace the sticks.
Maintenance is minimal, especially for drums. Cymbals and the chrome or metal parts of the drum will need to be polished at times. If a drumhead is dented or worn, it will need to be replaced which can set you back approximately $25 for each head and takes very little time to replace. |
