Vasectomy No No’s

While a vasectomy makes a great choice for some people, there are those who should not consider a vasectomy, or at the very least should consider for a very long time before even making an initial appointment.  Please make sure you discus your concerns and questions with an actual doctor before you make any final decisions, to ensure that you make the best and most well informed decision possible for yourself.

#1.  If you are very young, you should consider holding off on a vasectomy.  Young men are not usually ready emotionally to make such a commitment.  Many doctors will also not consider performing a vasectomy on a very young man to ensure that they are emotionally mature enough to make a good decision.

#2.  If you have no children, it is also typically a bad idea to have a vasectomy.  While some men never want children most do.  If you find yourself as a man who has no desire to have children, whether now or ever in the future, that is fine, but you should be completely sure of this decision before having a vasectomy.  Similarly, if you have only one or two children you may want to seek deep in your heart and ensure you want no more children before having a vasectomy.  The decision is ultimately yours, however it is better to wait on the vasectomy for a few years, rather than run and try to have it reversed within a few short years of having it performed.

#3.  A vasectomy will never solve any problems you have, whether they are emotional, marital, or sexual.  It is not a solution to those problems, and should never be viewed as one.  If your wife is telling you that she is leaving if you do not get a vasectomy, then there is likely some other problems in your relationship that should be discovered and worked out.  Similarly, if you think having a vasectomy will make you feel better about yourself you should not have one done.  A vasectomy is only to help prevent pregnancy and not to resolve any other problems you may be experiencing.  Make sure you are considering a vasectomy for the right reasons.

#4.  If you think there might be any reason at all under the sun that you might want more children, such as you get married, divorced and then remarried, a child dies, you suddenly win the lottery, or if you suddenly got a huge raise and wanted a house full of children then a vasectomy might be something to consider in the future, but probably not a good idea at this point.  You should be very sure that you are no longer wanting any more children before you even consider a vasectomy, it is considered a permanent form of birth control, and while it is possible to reverse the vasectomy, it is not always successful and is a very expensive procedure.

#5.  If you are not worried about having a vasectomy because you’ll just have a reversal then you have put a bit too much thought into the reversal process which means that you are likely to have it reversed later on, so why not save the money from both procedures and wait until you are no longer considering having a reversal in the future.

#6.  If you are involved in a stressful situation for any reason, whether your job, marriage, children or whatever other personal reason you should postpone considering a vasectomy until things are much calmer.  With any surgical decision, you should never consider such a decision until the stress in your life has returned to normal.
